The mass adoption of tablet devices globally has paved way for large scale development of supporting applications, making tablets much more versatile and multi functional than other mobile device options. Tablets have evolved to become better digital signage solutions than traditional displays that are larger and costlier. Tablets as a digital signage platform provide a virtual sheet of paper that can be reused infinite times, saving hardware costs for enterprises. Additionally, tablets are familiar and easy-to-use, popular POS or interactive marketing tools as well.
Retail enterprises as well as related service providers are adopting tablets to incorporate versatility in their businesses. Tablets are being used to attract clientele through digitized visual stimulation and also to achieve brand awareness.
RETAIL INDUSTRY
Tablets such as iPads, Galaxy tabs, Nexus 7, or Microsoft Surface have seen great global adoption. Retailers use these hyper-portability devices to make their brick and mortar experience better . Also, 90% of sales professionals surveyed said the devices improved their productivity by 70% as tablets allowed them to focus more on buyers rather than search for the information.

4. Augmented reality in retail store stations for up selling
Customized apparel recommendation can be provided by full body scanning using tablets. Many retailers use virtual fitting applications as an advertising tool to enhance their sales and customer experience.
In October 2011, Debenhams launched UK’s first ever virtual store where the customer could use their iPhone or iPad 2 screens to virtually try the retailer’s top dresses and order. Macy’s Virtual Fitting Room also uses similar technology and concept. Interior retailer Franc franc is trying to simulate furniture arrangement for its customers. One can take a picture of a room from a tablet, selects pieces of furniture, place them inside the room and see the appearance of the furniture on-screen. Toshiba is planning to do the same for its appliance retail stores. Augmented Reality industry is predicted to grow many folds in the years to come and tablets present themselves as the most favored platforms.
5. Reducing time and post-purchase dissonance
Demonstrating all possible combinations of products on customers’ tablets lead to quick decisions, reducing time spent by staff on per transaction. It also decreases post-purchase dissonance which hampers brand loyalty.
HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY
The hospitality industry is a multi-billion dollar industry which includes restaurants, transportation, travel, entertainment, hotels and amusement parks. Use of portable mobile devices like tablets is a great way for hotels to help their staff engage with the customers and promote their services. And above all, numerous options of tablets to choose from and easy availability of complimenting applications makes tablets easy to adopt and maintain.

Decades ago, hotels relied on static signs in formats such as paper posters and etched metal plates to capture customer attention. As the industry grew, these traditional formats become obsolete due to high printing costs, lead time and involvement of high manual work. Presiden Joko Widodo menyinggung soal urgensi bagi pengembangan pusat data (_data center_) di Tanah Air. Saat memimpin rapat terbatas mengenai hal tersebut di Kantor Presiden, Jakarta, pada Jumat, 28 Februari 2020, Presiden menyebut bahwa pusat data yang fokus dikembangkan di Indonesia akan mendatangkan banyak manfaat bagi perusahaan rintisan lokal yang saat ini masih banyak menggunakan pusat data di luar negeri.
"Kita tahu saat ini banyak _startup-startup_ kita yang dalam beberapa tahun terakhir tumbuh sangat pesat masih menggunakan _data center_ di luar negeri. Padahal kalau _data center_ itu ada di Indonesia akan banyak manfaatnya," ujar Presiden.
"Lebih cepat, lebih aman, dan membantu untuk _local troubleshooting_ dalam pengembangan sistem yang bisa dilakukan dengan lebih cepat," imbuhnya.
Di sisi lain, potensi ekonomi digital dan jumlah penduduk Indonesia yang begitu besar mengundang ketertarikan pemain-pemain global seperti Microsoft, Amazon, Alibaba, dan Google untuk berinvestasi mengembangkan pusat datanya di Tanah Air. Apalagi Indonesia juga memiliki ekosistem perusahaan rintisan yang paling aktif di Asia Tenggara.
Meski demikian, Kepala Negara juga tak ingin agar Indonesia hanya menjadi pasar dan penonton bagi industri tersebut. Investasi pembangunan pusat data harus memberikan nilai tambah dan transfer pengetahuan bagi Indonesia.
"Siapkan regulasinya termasuk yang mengatur soal investasi _data center_ yang ingin masuk ke Indonesia. Kita juga harus memastikan investasi _data center_ di Indonesia memberikan nilai tambah baik dalam pelatihan _digital talent_, pengembangan pusat riset, kerja sama dengan pemain-pemain nasional maupun dalam _sharing_ pengetahuan dan teknologi," ucapnya.
Tak hanya bagi pemain global, Presiden juga ingin mendorong munculnya pemain-pemain besar lainnya dari dalam negeri terkait dengan investasi pengembangan pusat data ini. Mulai dari BUMN telekomunikasi hingga pihak-pihak swasta yang belakangan sudah mulai bergerak ke bisnis pusat data.
Lebih jauh, berkaitan dengan perlindungan data pengguna, Kepala Negara juga mengingatkan soal pentingnya hal tersebut bagi keamanan dan kedaulatan data. Saat ini pemerintah telah mengusulkan kepada DPR mengenai rancangan Undang-Undang Perlindungan Data Pribadi yang mengatur soal hal itu.
"RUU Perlindungan Data Pribadi juga menjadi jalan keluar dan solusi atas banyaknya pengaturan data pribadi dalam beberapa peraturan perundang-undangan yang ada. Ada kurang lebih mungkin 32 regulasi yang mengatur data pribadi," tuturnya.
Adapun terhadap penerapannya di lingkungan pemerintah, Presiden Joko Widodo meminta agar Indonesia segera mengembangkan pusat data nasional terintegrasi yang menyinkronkan seluruh kementerian dan lembaga. Menurut survei Kementerian Komunikasi dan Informatika pada 2018 lalu, terdapat kurang lebih 2.700 pusat data yang tersebar di 630 instansi baik pusat maupun daerah.
"Berarti rata-rata terdapat empat pusat data pada setiap instansi pemerintah. Secara nasional, utilisasi pusat data dan perangkat keras juga hanya mencapai rata-rata 30 persen dari kapasitas. Fakta ini mengindikasikan terjadinya duplikasi anggaran belanja teknologi informasi dan komunikasi karena setiap kementerian mengembangkan pusat datanya sendiri-sendiri. Ini yang ke depan harus kita hindari," tandasnya.
Untuk diketahui, saat menghadiri Indonesia Digital Economy Summit 2020 pada Kamis, 27 Februari 2020, kemarin, Presiden Joko Widodo bertemu dengan salah satu CEO perusahaan global yang juga bergerak dalam pengembangan pusat data, CEO Microsoft Satya Nadella. Dalam pertemuan tersebut, Kepala Negara menyampaikan bahwa pihaknya akan bersegera menyusun regulasi mengenai investasi pengembangan pusat data di Indonesia.
"Intinya mereka (Microsoft) ingin investasi di _data center_, tetapi saya sampaikan bahwa kita masih mengajukan undang-undang untuk perlindungan data pribadi ke DPR yang belum selesai. Tetapi Microsoft ingin segera investasi di Indonesia, sehingga dalam seminggu ini akan kita putuskan untuk membuat sebuah regulasi sederhana yang mendukung investasi yang berkaitan dengan _data center_," kata Presiden.

The South Korean government is looking into an en-masse migration from Windows 7 to Linux, and according to local reports, the officials are eyeing the adoption of three different operating systems across various agencies.
Windows 7 reached the end of support on January 14 this year, and now the government wants to avoid upgrading to Windows 10 in order to cut licensing costs, but also to reduce reliance on Microsoft.
One report indicates that the strategy is to complete the migration to Linux by 2026, at which point Linux should be powering devices that are used for Internet access. If Windows continues to power any computers, they must be used for intranet services, meaning they would be isolated from the rest of the network where access from the outside is available.
The Korean Postal Service will move from Windows 7 to TMaxOS, a Linux-based operating system powered by South Korean software company TmaxSoft. This technically provides the government with more control given the software powering their devices is developed by a domestic firm.
Windows 10 appears to be a no-no
Other government departments have already moved part of their fleets to Linux and are working on plans to expand the adoption to more devices.
The Ministry of National Defense and National Police Agency, for example, currently runs Harmonica OS 3.0, which is customized with a series of Korean applications, while the Ministry of Public Administration and Security installed the locally-developed Gooroom Cloud OS based on Debian.
Local officials expect to save millions of dollars by simply eliminating licensing costs, although history has shown that investing in staff training and professional support could generate more expenses in the short term.
For Microsoft, on the other hand, losing such a high-profile customer is certainly bad news, especially as the company insists for Windows 7 devices to be upgraded to Windows 10. There’s a good chance, however, that Microsoft is already in talks with the South Korean government, so we really shouldn’t be too surprised in the transition to Linux is eventually abandoned if an agreement between the two is reached.

Opportunities for new business ecosystems can be found in customer and market pain points.
Thanks to rapidly evolving technology, it has never been easier for organisations to cross traditional industry and geographic boundaries and capture new sources of revenue. Digital business ecosystems, networks of organisations that provide integrated services to consumers in a way they could not have done on their own, provide a win-win scenario for customer and business alike.
These ecosystems leverage digital technologies and customer data to offer personalised and frictionless services, and are popping up in almost every industry and disrupting existing landscapes. In turn, customers are embracing the integrated services these ecosystem players are offering, and increasingly expecting their interactions with traditional companies to be just as personalised and frictionless.
As the Fourth Industrial Revolution exponentially increases technological innovation, customer expectations and changes the nature of scale and capability, going it alone is no longer an option for business. It's time for the individual company to think bigger — and make some new friends.
Where to start?
There are many examples of companies building and participating in expanding business ecosystems. Gaming company Tencent branched into the Chinese banking industry in 2014, launching WeBank, which combines new technology with innovative implementation, including using facial recognition to grant loans.1
Indonesia-based Gojek is another example. Starting off as a call centre connecting Indonesian consumers to courier and two-wheeled ride-hailing services, they expanded into e-wallet solutions, food delivery, car maintenance, video streaming, personal care, home cleaning, ticket selling and more.2 To do this, Gojek took steps to both acquire ventures and partner with other organisations. For instance, Google Maps enables the Gojek GPS services, while Singaporean DBS bank offers digital payment options to Gojek's ride-hailing users.3*
Considering the disruption ecosystems are generating, and the seemingly unlimited business value they are unlocking, ecosystem engagement should be on every organisation's agenda. But where do you start? Here are our top three recommendations.
1. Build ecosystems into your strategy
Ecosystems need to be embedded into organisational strategy for the greatest chance at success. It should be an essential part of how you think about the future of your business and how you plan transformation programs. Employees in each layer of the organisation should be encouraged to think about partnerships, to be empowered to share ideas with higher management, and to put structures in place to transform those ideas into living partnerships.
Ping An is an example of an organisation that has built on its ecosystem strategy. Starting as an insurance business, the Chinese company has created five ecosystems: in financial services, healthcare, auto services, real estate services and smart city services. They even invest 1 percent of their revenue into new technologies (AI, blockchain and cloud computing) to further build up their focus areas.4
2. Find a sweet spot
While you work on embedding ecosystem engagement in your corporate strategy, start brainstorming potential opportunities. Begin from the end user's perspective and ask yourself key questions, such as:
What customer pain points could be solved? In Singapore, the United Overseas Bank uncovered a problem in the car buying process: the amount of paperwork and time between salesperson and customer for a car loan application. Together with seven dealerships and a C2C marketplace, they launched a digital financing solution for car buyers.5 Once you've identified a problem area, consider how your customer data could be leveraged to offer personalised experiences and alleviate that issue. Mercedes-Benz, for example, is connecting all its new cars with Amazon Echo or Google Home, and once a user has driven away from home, the device performs a 'goodbye routine' to warn users of potential hazards (for example, if the iron was left on) or to provide convenience features (such as automatically adjusting the central heating).6
What market pain points could be addressed? When looking into joining or creating new ecosystems, it is important to look over the walls of your existing customer base. To assist the 3.6 million Americans who miss doctor appointments each year due to lack of reliable transportation, Uber introduced Uber Health, a collaboration with healthcare organisations designed to provide reliable, comfortable transportation for patients and allowing healthcare professionals to schedule rides for patients.7
Could the risk of digital transformation be mitigated? To anticipate potential change in demand for cars due to the popularity of ride sharing, Volkswagen engaged in a joint venture with ride-sharing app DiDi. The two companies are working together on a car-sharing service featuring environmentally friendly vehicles.8 DiDi is also collaborating with 31 other organisations in the DiDi Auto Alliance, which aims to transform the main business model in the Chinese automotive industry and shape the future of smart mobility.9
3. Select the right business ecosystem model
Whether your purpose is to make the lives of your current customers easier, to tap into new customers or to anticipate new competition, there are three models that you can consider when it comes to the kind of ecosystem you are interested in.
Firstly, there is a takeover model where organisations buy another player to broaden their scope of activities. Swedish furniture business Ikea, for example, acquired TaskRabbit, an online platform that links users with trusted freelancers, to offer an easy furniture assembly service to shoppers.10 When buying furniture, Ikea customers can now choose a date and time for a TaskRabbit member to assemble their new furniture.
Next, there is the collaboration model, where companies join forces with partners to launch new service offerings. Ikea is collaborating with both UNYQ, an industry-leader in personalised prosthetic devices and Area Academy, an educational eSport company, to explore how personalisation and home furnishing can change gaming and life around it – addressing appearance, ergonomics and mobility.11
Finally, there is the investment model, in which an organisation invests in smaller players. This model is popular in the financial services industry in Australia, where organisations are buying a stake in smaller players in anticipation of future needs. Westpac bank, for example, is investing in startups through their Reinventure fund, with the ultimate goal to extend the scope of its current activities.12
Strength in numbers
As companies face an ever-transforming business landscape, the ability to compete is becoming harder. Even companies that are digitally mature and able to get to market quickly face shifting economies of scale, ever increasing sophistication of technology and changing customer expectations. Being the 'one and only' to deliver a unique customer experience is becoming less and less realistic.
Instead, companies must now think about more than just themselves. Building out, investing in or joining greater ecosystems allows you to capitalise on the offerings that other organisations provide, and this combination of products and services — that could never be achieved by one company alone — becomes a welcome differentiator
